It is rooted in ancient yoga practices and was popularized by K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century. The term "Ashtanga" means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, referring to the eightfold path of yoga as described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. This path aims to lead practitioners towards self-realization and spiritual growth.
